Background
African American Studies provides students with a comprehensive quality undergraduate education. One of the primary goals of the department is to provide our students with skills to prepare them for their professional careers. Internships give students the opportunity to use their academic skills in real-world settings under the supervision of professionals and faculty.
Field Practicum
Students will typically intern at a sponsoring agency over the course of one semester (15 weeks). Students can intern a maximum of 10 hours per week at a sponsoring agency, and typically no more than 120 hours per semester.
Intern Eligibility
Students must be enrolled in AAS 3366: African American Studies Community Internship
and must be at least Junior Status. See the assigned instructor for more information
about requirements, including placement with an organization that serves majority
Black populations, to receive credit.
Internship Opportunities
The Afrocentric Communiversity (2 positions available)
Led by an alumna of UH, the Afrocentric Communiversity, LLC is an African-centered consulting company for nonprofits, grassroots organizations and Community Builders. Our goal is to transform the way the community 鈥渄oes鈥 organization work. The Communiversity strives to redefine the relationship between community institutions, community engagement, and academia. Although located in Fort Worth, TX we have served many community institutions in Texas and primarily Houston. Our current portfolio consists of Birth Workers, schools, social justice organizations, community centers and social entrepreneurs.
Buffalo Soldiers National Museum (CLOSED Fall 2025)
The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum was founded in 2001 by Vietnam Veteran and African American Military Historian Captain Paul J. Matthews. The private collection of military artifacts that Captain Matthews collected for 30 years became the foundation for the museum. It now boasts the largest collection of African American Military memorabilia in the World. Our mission is to educate, preserve, promote and perpetuate the history, tradition and outstanding contributions of the Buffalo Soldier and African American soldiers
Houston Area Urban League (multiple positions)
The Houston Area Urban League (The League) and African American Studies have partnered to provide internships for AAS majors and minors seeking practical learning experiences in community development, including workforce training, health and wellness initiatives, housing and social services, and education and youth development. The mission of the Houston Area Urban League is to enable African Americans and other minorities to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights.
SAiD Institute (Society for Africans in the Diaspora)
Society for Africans in Diaspora (SAiD Institute), is a non-profit institution that provides art, culture, connection, and enrichment through educational and community-building programs for Africans in the Diaspora. We amplify the global contributions of Africans in the diaspora through education and community-building programs that dispel misinformation and encourage healthy civic engagement and collaborations. Our mandate is to build bridges of understanding between Africans and Americans.
Duties and responsibilities include planning and executing outreach strategies to reach target audiences.
UH鈥檚 Library Archives (1 position)
The current intern will work with the UH Early Black Students Collection. Together, the intern and the university archivist design and internship that meets the education focus of the AAS department and the students鈥 interests. The archives.
African American History Research Center (multiple positions)
The African American History Research Center is one of three special collections operated by the Houston Public library. It is housed in the site of Gregory elementary School, which was the first public school for Black students in Houston. Interns will work with the archivists:
- Conduct interviews and work with transcribing the interviews in development of a collaborative project between AAS and the library.
- General intern (conduct research, develop content for public engagement, identify suitable materials for exhibition, and document research findings)
Boynton Chapel Methodist Church (Multiple positions available)
Boynton has been situated in Houston鈥檚 Third Ward since 1957.
Duties: social media, grant writing assistance, planning programs.
Students may receive credit for an internship that is not listed above with the approval of the instructor.
