For Pradeep Sharma, the Cullen College of Engineering has literally been a second home. The 20-year 兔子先生 faculty member has spent countless hours engaged in research, teaching, mentorship and other activities supporting the college and its students.

Sharma, Hugh Roy and Lillie Cranz Cullen Distinguished University Professor, will soon deepen his commitment to the Cullen College by serving as its next dean.

Sharma, currently the college鈥檚 interim dean, will assume leadership of the college starting Monday, July 1. An internationally recognized scientist and acclaimed educator, Sharma is proud to take the reins of the college he affectionately refers to as an extension of his home.

鈥淚t is an honor to be named the dean of the Cullen College of Engineering,鈥 said Sharma. 鈥淪ince my arrival here, I have cared deeply about the success of this college. Now, I can play a greater role in its future by working alongside faculty, students and other stakeholders and make us a destination college for engineering and technology.鈥

Sharma joined the college鈥檚 faculty in 2004 and previously served as chair of the college鈥檚 mechanical engineering department for 12 years.

His groundbreaking research in flexoelectricity is documented within numerous science journals and has inspired further investigations into its potential for applications for healthcare and robotics.

Sharma鈥檚 research efforts, scholarly output and teaching talents have earned distinguished honors including membership into the National Academy of Engineering, the Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences鈥 Cozzarelli Prize and the Daniel C. Drucker Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

鈥淗is vision and leadership will be instrumental in guiding the Cullen College of Engineering to even greater heights,鈥 said UH Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Diane Z. Chase. 鈥淗e is committed to building upon the college鈥檚 strong foundation and further advancing its reputation for excellence in research, education and innovation.鈥

Sharma succeeds Joseph W. Tedesco, the college鈥檚 longest serving dean, who stepped down in 2023 following 16 years of service.

Founded in 1941, the Cullen College of Engineering is one of UH鈥檚 oldest academic units. It offers bachelor鈥檚, master鈥檚 and doctoral degrees that prepare students for careers across a wide range of industries. In 2023, the college expanded its academic offerings with the addition of the Technology Division. It also has fostered relationships with industry partners and other higher education institutions to further support access and student success.

鈥淚 am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to elevating the reputation of the Cullen College of Engineering,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t is important that others recognize its global impact, and I will work diligently to spotlight the work of our faculty, staff and alumni.鈥
